Sterlite Copper Launches Successive Fourth Year ‘Ilam Mottukal’ Project

  • To support Education of 8030 girl children of 78 Schools in Thoothukudi district

Thoothukudi, Oct 12: Sterlite Copper commenced the successive fourth year of ‘Ilam Mottukal’ Project in a function held at Community Hall, Tharuvaikulam, Thoothukudi today (16.10.2015) in partnership with ‘Humana People to People India’

Ilam Mottukal Project is one of the key CSR initiatives of Sterlite Copper to improve the quality of education of the girl child in the Thoothukudi District. For this project, Sterlite Copper will support the education of 8030 girl children from 78 Government & Government Aided Primary and Middle Schools in Thoothukudi District this year.

Mr P Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper and Mr K Nagarajan, District Elementary Educational Officer – Thoothukudi District jointly inaugurated the successive fourth year of ‘Ilam Mottukal’ Project by distributing an education kit to girl students in the Community Hall, Tharuvaikulam. Mr K Nagarajan appreciated the efforts taken by Sterlite Copper for girl child education during his chief guest address.

“Realising that girls are marginalised in the society, we felt the need to provide girl children with a good and healthy childhood. Through this project, we seek to provide girls with the opportunity to study and grow to achieve independence in thought and action. Our project ‘Sterlite Ilam Mottukal’ will help in the holistic development of these girls,” said Mr P Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper

The additional academic, material, social and moral supports are the key components in the programme. Academic special classes will be conducted for two hours beyond school time which will help to bridge the learning gaps and enable children to reach their grade specific competency level in school. The classes will be conducted by 160 trained tutors selected within the community with the vision that they would be the local resource to act as friends and mentors to the children.
